What is snowshoeing?
Snowshoeing is basically winter hiking made easy. With snowshoes attached to your feet your weight is more evenly distributed and so you are less likely to sink up to your thighs into deep snow.
Modern snowshoes also have heel riser bars which you engage when going up hill which takes the pressure off your ankles when climbing.
Is it difficult?
The beauty of snowshoeing is that anybody can do it.
Snowshoeing can be a great workout if you feel the need to exercise your legs and lungs. But it can also be a less energetic and physically demanding pursuit which takes you along picture-postcard tracks through pine forests, past little mountain villages and up into what are mountain pastures in the summer months.
What can I expect?
On this snowshoeing short break you’ll have three full days of exploring both the French and Spanish Pyrenees from your base in the Luchon valley.
Each day’s itinerary will be decided by your fully qualified and experienced local guide, having regard to weather and snow conditions as well as your physical ability.
You may explore tracks around the le Mourtis ski station with spectacular views towards the highest peak in the Pyrenees, Pic d’Aneto. Or head along to the Aran valley in Spain to discover the high plateaux near the Baqueira Beret ski resort.
The possibilities are endless and all are guaranteed to leave you wondering why on earth you haven’t tried snowshoeing before!

Adventure Reviews
What an exciting trip! We had all sorts of weather but Penny, and guide Jean Noel, found interesting and exciting places for us to learn the basics of snowshoeing – Jean Noel is a very experienced & knowledgeable guide. Our accommodation was excellent – kind & thoughtful hosts, tasty & copious food, and a very comfy bed (much needed after long days on the hill). From a smooth flight, to a swift hire car pick-up, and an easily found B&B, every part of the organising was seamless.
Penny is helpful & fun – and flexible enough to respond personally to the needs of her clients. We had a lovely short break & return home feeling happily tired & challenged.
